Before You Cast Off

Even the most experienced and skillful boaters can have problems when something unexpected happens. No responsible person willingly puts himself or his friends and family in jeopardy by ignoring the potential risks on a boat.

There are some things you can do to minimize any risks. Here are some important ones.

Before the season even begins, JOIN BOATU.S. and sign up for their highest towing option.

Check your local weather forecast.   Avoid these conditions!!! ------------>

Carry up-to-date charts. (Click here to see why)

Make sure your fuel tanks are full. It wouldn't hurt to carry spare fuel in a can.

Check the bilge for leaks and fumes.

Be sure that you carry 1 PFD for each person on board. Kids must be wearing theirs.

Check your VHF radio by doing a "radio check" on Ch. 09 - Not Ch. 16.

Make sure you have an adequate anchor and sufficient line for it. (minimum - 200')

Leave the beer and liquor ashore. Big Brother IS watching.
